International symposium ÒBULK NANOSTRUCTURED MATERIALS: from fundamentals to innovations. BNM-2007Ó

summary

The international symposium ÒBulk nanostructured materials: from fundamentals to innovations. BNM-2007Ó was held in Ufa on August 14-18, 2007, organized by the Ufa State Aviation Technical University (USATU).  A total of 223 scientists took part in the symposium. They represented 23 countries: Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Germany, USA, Japan, China, Austria, Turkey, Brazil, Poland, South Korea, Czech Republic, Iran, UK, Greece, India, Hungary, Slovakia, Italy, Estonia, Spain, and Republic of South Africa. Russia was represented by 156 participants; representatives from 7 Ufa universities and research centers were among them. Below is an illustration of the geographical coverage which includes the countries (colored ones) represented at the symposium.

The program of the conference was arranged with the following sessions: ÒProcessing of bulk nanomaterialsÓ, ÒStructural CharacterizationÓ, ÒPhysical and mechanical propertiesÓ, ÒDeformation mechanisms and their transformationÓ, ÒModeling of nanostructured materialsÓ. In addition, a special session for young scientists and a session of the International Science and Technology Center ÒInnovation trends and applications of nanomaterialsÓ were organized.

The symposium was co-organized by the Russian Foundation for Basic Research, the Academy of Sciences of the Bashkortostan Republic, the Institute for Metal Superplastity Problems RAS, the International Science and Technology Center (Moscow), the Ufa Motor Industrial Incorporation, the Priority-oriented national project ÒEducationÓ of the RF Ministry of Education and Science and other institutes.

The symposium demonstrated that research in the field of bulk nanomaterials (BNM), which started twenty years ago in Ufa, has now achieved wide international recognition and development. The broad geography of the conducted work, the dynamics of the growth in scientific investigations and the high ratings of scientific publications prove that this subject is one of the most important trends of modern nanomaterials science and nanotechnologies.

Recent discoveries of unique properties of bulk nanomaterials, together with the novel deformation mechanisms and phase transformations, will be the basis for further development and applications of bulk nanomaterials as functional and structural materials for the next generation. Now it is time to pass from the laboratory testing of bulk nanomaterials to their commercial application. This is supported by the creation of new schemes and technologies for processing bulk nanomaterials by means of severe plastic deformation techniques and the wide involvement not only of model materials but also of industrial alloys and steels in the research efforts.

The successful innovative developments for the application of nanostructured Ti in medicine and machinery, the use of nanomaterials in sports and everyday life and many other possibilities were presented during the symposium.

The following represents the top-priority tasks in the field for the next years:

The symposium participants stressed the high international scientific and organizational level of the conducted event.

The organizing committee thought it viable to hold the symposium regularly once in two years for generalization and discussion of the results obtained during the given period in the field of bulk nanostructured materials.
